During the first Coronavirus lockdown in 2020, the Kabin was constructed at End of the World Garden, Cornwall, from an experimental design by Paul Chaney based on a traditional ‘bender’ structure but using modern, largely reclaimed materials. The armature of timber and MDPE mains water pipe is covered with heavy duty tarpaulin and lined with insulation. A woodburning stove is fitted for heating, a solar panel provides power and there is a small outdoor kitchen.
Once COVID restrictions are lifted, the Kabin will be available as a residency space for Urbanomic authors and associates as a place to stay, think, and work, and as accommodation during Urbanomic events at EOTWG.
EOTWG is a working forest garden with a variety of seasonal crops and fruit trees growing on the site as well as a borehole to provide drinking water. A coppicing scheme is in operation to ensure a sustainable firewood supply.
