Samuel Butler (1835–1902) was an iconoclastic English author who published a variety of works on topics including Christian orthodoxy, evolutionary thought, Italian art, and literary history. In his essay Darwin among the Machines (1863), Butler combined his observations of the rapid technological progress of the Industrial Revolution and Charles Darwin’s theory of the evolution of the species, concluding that the next step in evolution would be that of Artificial Intelligence.
