Mattin is an artist from Bilbao living in Berlin who works conceptually with noise and improvisation. He plays the audience as an instrument using techniques of alienation and estrangement as a way to explore our lack of freedom. He often works in collaboration and in pedagogic settings through workshops. Mattin has toured extensively around the world, released 100 records on different labels, and has written about improvisation, free software and against the notion of intellectual for magazines such as Mute and The Wire. In 2009 he co-edited, with Anthony Iles, the book Noise & Capitalism (Arteleku) and in 2017 took part in documenta 14.
