Euclides Da Cunha

Euclides da Cunha (1866 –1909) was a Brazilian journalist, war correspondent, sociologist and engineer. He was brought to prominence in Brazil and beyond by his work Os Sertões (Rebellion in the Backlands), a collection of his non-fictional but poetically charged accounts, for the newspaper Estado de Sao Paolo, of the military actions launched by the Brazilian government against the rebellious village of Canudos. This work increased interest in the interior of the nation. Da Cunha died in 1909 at the age of 43, shot during a dispute over his wife's marital affair.
