Coda: The Good Post-Europeans

What is Europe? What is Asia? These may no longer be good questions for us in the twenty-first century. Not only because the emergence of the imperial power of the United States has changed the course of history since the twentieth century, while the good old Ius Publicum Europaeum failed to address globalisation and Imperialism, as Carl Schmitt showed in his Nomos of the Earth, but also because the inquiry risks falling back to the ‘homecoming’ of past centuries by searching for an essence of a nation or a culture, which the ‘great political leaders’ have been promoting. A re-orientation is necessary, but that doesn’t mean that we can go back to the kind of division between East and West that existed prior to the sixteenth century.…
